Day 12: Hitting the Atlantic Ocean

We are very close to the Atlantic already - still 20 km to do through the typical Basque landscape with pretty houses all painted in white and red color.

Can't wait to see the Ocean. At Saint-Jean-de-Luz, after 2.800 km on the road with ou 35-year-old sidecar, Nicolas and I finish the crossing of the Pyrenees.

Time for a drink in a café in the Port of Sean-Jean-de-Luz. Since I haven't had an Armagnac in the Gascogne, there is one this morning. Strong stuff at 10:00 am. Armagnac finally hits the coffee. Cuts pretty much the strong alcohol and doesn't spoil the coffee at all: 2 + 2 = 5.

Biarritz and Bayonne is a huge economic agglomeration with lots of traffic and many people. After so many lonely roads in the mountains, we are back to red traffic lights and traffic congestions. Contrary to the solo motorbike, sidecar doesn't allow to overtake easily trucks and cars in front of us. We have to be patient, not my strongest skill.

Through endless pine tree woods, we travel north direction Bordeaux. At Mérignac, we spend an hour with a friend of mine, Thierry, the owner of local Yamaha dealership. He helped us last year when our engine failed and the bike had to be transported back to Belgium by truck.
Thierry is a sidecar guy himself (owns 3 of them and 8 solo bikes) and I promised to come see him again when our sidecar is back on the road. He will do a trip through whole of Europe in the near future and I am looking forward to welcome him when coming to good old Belgium.

Today's last 100 km bring us to Royan at the Gironde. 25 min ferry trip from Le-Verdon-sur-Mer. Loads of sun during the crossing. Masks are mandatory on the ship.

Once tent is pitched, we go have a pizza with a plate of "crudités" in a small restaurant in Royan. Owner is from Belgium, she is happy to talk a few words in Flemish with us ...
